Step 5
The Step 5 manual is the last in the series for group training. The number of children at chess clubs reaching the fifth Step is unfortunately not large. Many chess players use this manual for self-study (there are simply too few group trainings at this level) and most training is individual.
The attention to tactics in this Step is more modest than in the previous ones, although tactics still play the main role in the pupils' games. Positional aspects play an increasingly important role for the fifth-step player. The lessons on pawn structure, the seventh rank, strong squares and open files contain a lot of strategic content.
Planned play is important in chess and is part of several lessons on the endgame. The lesson 'Defending' addresses aspects that almost all pupils underuse.
The 'fifth Step' consists of a manual and four workbooks.
