Workbook Step 4 plus
Quad-language version with attention to opening, middlegame and endgame, both strategically and tactically.
Contents
Since the 3rd edition Workbook Step 4 plus is published only in a 4-language version, including Dutch. The reminders have disappeared but are still available as a download. New exercises have been added on the freed pages.
The higher the Step, the more topics are worth treating. We pay attention to the opening, middlegame and endgame, both strategically and tactically.
More or less new topics:
- Trapping — preparatory move for trapping (luring, eliminating the defence, chasing, aiming and clearance)
- The opening — vulnerabilities in the opening
- Small plan — opening up the position
- Chess problems — game players often skip them, but they are certainly worthwhile. Do not skip!
Deepening
Deepening of (briefly) introduced material:
- Small plan — moving a piece to a better square, exploiting vulnerabilities
- King's attack — cooperation queen+bishop and queen+knight; open files and opening lines
- Draw — forcing stalemate, insufficient material, perpetual check
- Blocking and interfering — the preparatory moves chasing and luring
- Discovered attack — setting up a battery
- Endgame technique — strategy, tactics and vulnerability in the endgame; technique, defending and the rook pawn
