Step 3

For the third Step, knowledge of the second is indispensable, but otherwise the third is not really more difficult.

The tactical themes are relatively easy and the lessons on the defence against tactics will not pose any problems either. Only trapping is tricky. It is comparable to mating, except that the king is no longer the target — another piece is.

Furthermore, the first pawn endings are introduced. For some children this is easy, but for those who still have problems with spatial control it is a serious challenge.

In this Step, again the necessary attention is paid to acquiring and improving supportive skills. One of these is 'thinking ahead': the student calculates the possibilities on the board in their head and at the same time visualises the new positions on the chessboard.

The 'third Step' consists of a manual and five workbooks.
