Certificates

Each Step can be completed with an exam. Students who score sufficiently receive the certificate corresponding to that Step. Every regional federation has a certificate coordinator. Schools and clubs can contact them for the exams and certificates. More information is available on the federation websites, reachable via the KNSB.

In preparation for the exam, it is advisable to let the students take a practice exam, and if necessary a second one in case of doubt. Try, however, to prevent them taking practice exams many times — it puts a strain on their enthusiasm and overemphasises the exam and the certificate. The Steps method has its own practice exams (order!). These differ from the KNSB ones. There are also exams for the plus workbooks and the Stepping stones. Interested adults can simply order a practice exam.

For Belgian users, 'real' Step exams and certificates are available for all Steps. Belgian chess trainers (youth leaders, teachers, etc.) can order the exams and certificates from Chess consult in Belgium.

Rupert van der Linden has designed a colourful certificate. The piece on the statue changes per Step, and the inscription (certificate, Urkunde, diplôme, diploma) and the text on the banner change per language.
